Habeeb & Bishop
Arabic folk music and electronic music
Khaled Habeeb (oud) and John Derek Bishop (live-sampling) are a duo that blends Arabic folk music with electronic music. The music they create together is improvised, with roots in traditional Arabic music and ambient experimental electronic music.
They have previously performed together at venues such as Victoria National Jazz Scene (Oslo), Punkt Festival (Kristiansand), Riksscenen (Oslo), Sølvberget (Stavanger), and Folken (Stavanger).
Welcome to a captivating concert in a historic setting!
"The enticing sound of the oud goes straight to my spine. Habeeb plays with emotion and spatial sense. There is air and openness in what comes, which clearly defines what it is. Bishop transforms and develops, and it’s wonderful to hear how they listen to each other. Bishop reuses the oud playing in creative ways and offers sound rarities that add an adventurous element to their interplay. This is tasteful. The balance between Habeeb’s melodic approach and Bishop’s challenging responses is good. Their material is easy to get into. Slowness prevails. Beauty does not need to be polished. When the electronics darken and open up to the night, it affects how the oud expression is perceived. They make each other greater. It’s nice to hear how Bishop’s distorted sounds do not dominate but serve the whole. Both are able to hold back, which is a victory for their music. It’s delightful to experience music that is soothing without making you sleepy."
